Surrender Dorothy

Surrender Dorothy

$4,500.00

In this piece, Dorothy stands at the center as a symbol of the human self — innocent, searching, and often unaware of the forces shaping her path. On one side, the Wicked Witch releases poppies into the air, recalling the spell that lulled Dorothy into sleep. On the other, Glinda releases snow, the gentle force that awakened her. These opposing gestures represent sedation and awakening, illusion and clarity, influence and liberation.

The work explores how easily perception can be altered and how subtly control can be exercised. The poppies and snow are not just references to a familiar story, but metaphors for the influences we live under every day - cultural, emotional, social, and psychological. Some numb us, some revive us, and often we move between the two without realizing it.

“Surrendered Dorothy” asks the viewer to consider:

How much of what we feel, believe, or pursue is truly our own?

And how often are we, like Dorothy, caught between forces that guide us without our consent or awareness?

It reflects how external forces, whether numbing or enlightening, often shape us without our awareness. The piece invites us to recognize the subtle influences around us - and decide if we will surrender or awaken.
